This book is full of a wealth of very good information about how to do practical setup work and adjustments to virtually any electric guitar. The cover of the book shows a DVD and announces that the book includes a free online video where "Dan shows you how easy it is to set up your Strat, Les Paul, Bass or Floyd Bass-equipped guitar so it plays in tune and feels great....." The last page of the book shows a table of contents for this video, but neither a DVD nor a link to the video is included anywhere in the book...Not that big of a deal, but I wasted about 40 minutes of my life talking to Amazon customer support reps and received (and ultimately had to return) a replacement which also had no DVD or video link. Just simple false advertising.I have a lot of respect for Dan Erlewine and the info he shares in this book. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the publisher of this book and the blatantly false cover they put on the book.

Pros:-Provides a lot of very good information about how the different parts of electric guitars work, common adjustments that need to be made, and things that often go wrong. This info also helps you evaluate and instrument when buying a used guitar. Dan E. is a credible and experienced source so you can believe what he writes.-All this information is provided in a relatively concise form, so you don't have to spend endless time going through various web sites, youtube videos, etc. to find it.- If you have some mechanical skills and nothing is seriously wrong with the guitar you're working on, this book will certainly help you get it set up, tuned up, and playing well.Cons:- As other reviewers have mentioned, the book promises "online videos" but I cannot find any link to the site hosting these videos.- The book would be even better if it were written as more of a step-by-step how-to setup guide. Instead, it's kind of disjointed and feels like a collection of notes on different topics rather than one cohesive work. A basic short setup outline is provided, but then you will find yourself flipping and skipping around to the different sections a lot during the process. You have to at read or at least skim the entire book first to get an idea of where the different information is found (and info about some topics shows up in more than one place).

I have a well-worn copy of his Guitar Player Repair Guide, this is more in-depth on a narrower subject (no acoustic stuff and more adjustments and repairs an amateur can pull off without too much risk). I'm looking forward to wearing this one out too. I have seen the reviews complaining about too much Les Paul, Strat and Tele but I disagree. It's simply that they are the most influential and prevalent designs and many other guitars using similar ideas and technology.

I still can't play worth a darned but as a amateur luthier, my friends and family are amazed at how well I can make their "piece of junk" guitars sounds awesome with the skills learned in this book. I had a half-body Takamine acoustic and an off-brand electric guitar that were hard to play and made me want to quit with sore fingers. The electric had a bad buzz on the high-e string that would never go away and was ruining my score on RockSmith PS3. This book gave me the skills to solve the problems!Although the book is titled for "Electric Guitar", many of the tools and techniques are applicable to acoustics as well. Highly recommend for anyone who 'hates' their guitars action. One of my "junk" electric guitars (purchased from a pawn shop and restrung) was so hated by friends and family for it's every-string-is-different height, action and playability that I almost threw it away. I used the techniques in this book and spent an afternoon completely re-tuned, corrected the intonation and re-strung it, adjusted the action and now that "junk" guitar is the go-to instrument for anyone who visits and wants to play! This book is a must-have for every guitarist!

I previously complained that there was no dvd with the book, but I eventually found a link to several videos for readers to follow, which are excellent. Dan's knowledge and skill is very apparent in these videos, as well as in the book. I've been playing for decades and wanted to learn how to set up any electric guitar to great playability. This book would enable anyone with basic knowledge of the guitar to set it up to play exactly how they want it to play. I'd recommend it to anyone who is sincerely interested in this topic.

Description of the parts of a guitar (neck, nut, saddles, etc.) is fairly good. Photography isn't great. However, there's nothing concrete that I can see, that "pulls it all together" with respect to setting up your guitar. In that area, everything is referred to in the general perspective. Haven't yet sought out the included video (It's online somewhere), so I can't comment on that. I'm put off by the fact that the author constantly refers the reader to Stewart MacDonald, to purchase parts - I'm sure they're a good company, but still, I bought a book, not a commercial. In all honesty, there's no information in this book that you couldn't find in 30 seconds on YouTube.
